The only person from this family I still speak to is Grandma. Our last few encounters have been so fraught with religious tension and intense emotions that I don’t know how to continue our relationship. We had many years where we swept my spirituality under the rug, along with all the other parts of me she doesn’t approve of, to have a semi-functional relationship. But ever since my grandfather died in 2016, she’s been different — no longer content to let sleeping dogs lie. Now our interactions summon this memory. I don’t know how to banish it back to the past where it belongs.
