I believe that the generational trauma of colonization made my Mexican family want to acclimate and “fit in” as much as possible. I think, subconsciously, we didn’t want to be otherized because our ancestors experienced genocide for the same thing. My family has a lot of baggage left over from the traumas that come with being powerless for so long. My mom and her siblings were never taught Spanish and therefore neither was I. It makes me sad that I’ve missed out on growing up speaking this language due to trying to fit into American society. I am planning to start studying to become fluent within the next couple of years so that I can reconnect with this side of my culture.
